Kauai officials have identified a Lihue motorcyclist who died Monday night following a crash near the intersection of Kuhio Hwy. and Ehiku St.

According to a preliminary investigation, Herbert Kaneholani III, 45, was heading south on Kuhio Hwy. at roughly 8 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with a Toyota sedan that was attempting to make a left turn from the highway onto Ehiku St.

Kaneholani was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, officials said.

Medics transported Kaneholani to Wilcox Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The 73-year-old male driver of the sedan and his female passenger were not injured.

Kuhio Hwy. was closed intermittently from Ahukini Rd. to Walmart for roughly three hours while KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an investigation and crews worked to clear the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation.

This is Kauai’s fifth traffic fatality of 2014.
