As MLB Draft approaches, Trapasso prepares for possible raid of recruiting class

Devan Stubblefield

Less than 24 hours away from the start of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft, one has to wonder if University of Hawaii Head Coach Mike Trapasso will be anxious this weekend?

Last season, six of seven members of his recruiting class ended up being drafted and signing pro contracts, with only Marcus Doi turning down his pro club.
This time around, six more are expected to get the call including Outfielders Jodd Carter of Hilo and recent Saint Louis grad Devan Stubblefield.

Below are the 6 highest regarded prospects according to several MLB scouts and scouting directors

Luke Eubank – RHP, Oxnard, Calif. (Oxnard CC, Western Nevada JC)
6-1, 190 lbs.
2013 stats (Western Nevada JC): 3-4, 2.89 ERA, 50 strikeouts in 46 innings. Named first team California Collegiate League.
“We’re very high on Luke. He throws in the high 80’s/low 90’s with movement. He is a weekend rotation guy.”

Tyler Brashears – RHP, Lake Forrest, Calif. (Saddleback CC)
6-2, 175 lbs.
2013 stats: 8-3, 2.28 ERA, 71 strikeouts in 86 innings, .189 opponent batting average
“Tyler is a high velocity, athletic pitcher and capable of being at the top of a Division I staff. He is a definite weekend rotation pitcher.”

Devan Stubblefield – OF, Honolulu, Hawai’i (Saint Louis HS)
5-11, 175 lbs.
Scouting Report: Stubblefield is an incredible, yet raw athlete. The Crusader is also slated to play wide receiver at UH, after putting up over 800 yards and 12 touchdowns last season on the gridiron. His swing has come a long way from being mechanical and clunky in 2013. He possesses a very high ceiling as a prospect, especially if he were to focus on baseball.

Jodd Carter – OF, Hilo, Hawai’i (Hilo HS)
5-9, 175 lbs.
2013 stats/notes: Led Hilo to the 2013 Big Island title and state semifinal. He batted 5-7 in two state tournament games with two doubles, a triple, and four RBI.
“Jodd is an exceptional athlete. He can really run and has the potential to be an exciting, top of the order player.”

Josh Pigg – RHP/OF, Sacramento, Calif. (Cosumnes River CC)
6-2, 190 lbs.
2013 stats/notes: Selected in the 28th round of the 2011 MLB draft (Cleveland Indians). He went 2-2 with 10 strikeouts at Cosumnes River and batted .267 with five runs and six RBI
“Josh has tremendous physical tools. He throws 90 mph with a late cut, and has a powerful left-handed swing. He is a possible two-way player.”

Matt Valencia – LHP, Escalon, Calif. (San Joaquin Delta CC)
6-1, 210 lbs.
2013 stats: Went 4-2 with one complete game. He posted a 2.59 ERA with 53 strikeouts.
“Matt is a legitimate three-pitch lefty. He throws high 80’s/low 90’s with a plus curveball. He’s a weekend rotation guy.”
