The state’s police union has weighed in on who it’s backing for governor.
SHOPO brass is putting its political weight behind Hawaii Independent Party candidate Mufi Hannmann.
The 11-member executive board announced the decision at its main office in Kalihi, saying it was in the interest of public safety.
“We have never been about any party affiliation, or any political race. We are about the candidates character and values,” said president Tenari Maafala.
“We believe that today’s early endorsement that will eventually carry over to the general election is a major statement of labor organizations saying we like what Mufi Hannemann and Les Chang stand for,” Hannemann said.
Maafala said SHOPO met with candidates David Ige and Duke Aiona before placing their support behind Hannemann.
The union represents approximately 3,100 police officers in Hawaii.
