The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) rescued a stranded hiker from the Haiku Stairs trail, aka Stairway to Heaven, Sunday morning.
The hiker started Saturday from the Moanalua Valley side of the trail, but when he got near its summit, he could go no further due to inclement weather.
He initially called for help at 1:56 a.m. Sunday, but because of darkness and the weather, the search was suspended at 2:20 a.m.
Because the stranded hiker was not injured or ill, HFD told him to stay put until daybreak.
The search resumed early Sunday morning, and the hiker was picked up at 7:55 a.m. and airlifted to the helicopter landing zone at Kaneohe District Park.
