Father shoots and kills man holding his daughter at gunpoint

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI/CNN) – A father says he shot and killed a man who was holding his daughter at gunpoint.

Now one suspect is dead and another is in critical condition.

Police say it began with two men approaching a 17-year-old girl in the street, taking her at gunpoint and forcing their way into her home.

The girl’s father shot and killed one and injured the other.

He asked not to be identified, but he told his story to KTVI beginning with the moment 31-year-old Terrell Johnson entered the home with the man’s 17-year-old girl in tow.

“He was holding her hostage. She was a human shield. So I did what I had to do,” the father said.

How did you have the confidence to pull the trigger when he was holding your daughter?

“It wasn’t like that. I mean, it just happened. I didn’t have no choice. He had my daughter so I did what I had to do,” the father said.

He says he has no idea who the men were or why they picked the home of his child’s mother.

He assumes robbery was the motive.

“I would think that was what their intentions were. I mean…I don’t know. I don’t really know,” he said.

Several shots were fired. Johnson was killed, and the man police say was with him, 33-year-old Cortez McClinton was injured.

Another bullet went across the street. Straight into the home of Jessica Swartz.

“I was just laying in bed watching TV getting ready to go to sleep. Then I hear the gunshots and heard glass break, or felt debris, jumped to the other side of my bed and waited for it to stop. Then called 911,” Swartz said.

The two suspects both have a history with police. The dead man, Johnson, served prison time for first degree robbery. The man in custody, McClinton, was charged with first degree murder back in 2010, but the charges had to be dropped according to the circuit attorney because witnesses wouldn’t cooperate.

Police are not saying if they believe this crime was random or targeted.
