Bread and pastry pop-up in Kakaako marks Sy’s final appearance (for now)

This weekend will be your last chance to get your hands (and taste buds) on Chris Sy’s freshly baked creations, at least for now.

Café Waiola by The Curb, located inside University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine in Kakaako, closed its doors Tuesday — and Sy’s operation along with it.

As a last hurrah, Sy will be holding a special pop-up in Kakaako this Saturday, selling his signature artisan city loaves, focaccia, cardamom buns and croissants (plain, spinach taegu, ham and cheese, almond, sesame and chocolate).

After that, Sy says he plans to devote his time to finding and opening a permanent location, possibly with an occasional pop-up or two along the way. Keep an eye out for updates on his progress on Twitter.

Saturday’s event will also include toasted creations by Kimberly Oi with sweet or savory toppings: house ricotta, honey and fresh fruit or tomato, olive oil, and avocado, both sprinkled with Hawaiian sea salt.

BreadShop at Snackbox will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 691 Auahi St. or until they run out.

Customers are limited to six pieces per person.
