The U.S. State Department requested on Sunday that the U.S. embassy in Baghdad bolster its security as Islamist insurgents overrun parts of Iraq.

The Pentagon confirms that the U.S. military has provided increased assistance at diplomatic facilities in Iraq’s capital.

Some embassy personnel are also temporarily relocating to other locations as the violence moves closer to Baghdad.

The attacking militants are part of the group known as ISIS, an Al Qaeda splinter group. It’s trying to establish an Islamic state in the region that would stretch from Iraq into northern Syria.
