Aiona proposes separate court system, peer-to-peer rehab to help homeless

Homeless in Hawaii

As Duke Aiona gears up for his run for the governor’s seat, he took time Monday to announce his plans to tackle the state’s homeless problem.

If elected governor, Aiona says he will command the state National Guard to develop a peer-to-peer homeless rehabilitation program.

He also wants to establish a separate homeless judicial court system, much like the separate drug and family court systems Hawaii has right now.

“It would allow family members who have exhausted all the means with a homeless family member with mental health issues to petition the court to have and to help them get into services,” he said.

The primary election is August 9.
