A Maui motorcyclist who was involved in a crash on Old Haleakala Hwy. died of his injuries on Friday.
A preliminary investigation said that 50-year-old Russell Szabo of Kula was traveling south on Saturday, June 7, when he lost control of his cycle, crossed left of center, and collided into the cement on the east shoulder of the highway.
He and his 45-year-old female passenger were both ejected from the cycle.
The female passenger from Wailuku sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Szabo was also taken to the same hospital, but his condition deteriorated and was then flown to Kaiser Medical Center of Oahu, where he later died.
Alcohol has been determined to be a factor in the collision, but the investigation is still pending.
This is Maui’s 13th road fatality, compared to eight this time last year.
