The Maui Police Department reports that a visitor died after being pulled from the ocean, unconscious.
On Sunday at about 2:27 p.m., 76-year-old Charles Hoover of High Point, NC, was found floating face down, motionless in what were calm waters approximately 10 feet from shore, fronting Kapalua Bay in Lahaina.
Beach goers pulled him to the shore and performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived. The medics and firefighters then administered CPR and were eventually able to regain a pulse.
Medics transported Hoover to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment, but Hoover was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine cause of death.
