Firefighters on Maui responded to a large fire at a construction site Thursday morning.

The fire was reported just before 9:15 a.m. at 120 Kane St. in Kahului, on the old Maui Land and Pine cannery behind Foodland, near HFM Foodservice, a local wholesale food distributor.

Fire officials said the fire burned 3,000-sq.-ft. of construction material and threatened an office trailer. Video from MAUIWatch shows construction workers battling the blaze.

The fire was extinguished at 11:30 a.m., officials said.

A 35-year-old construction worker suffered smoke inhalation while trying to put out the fire, officials said.

Kane St. was closed from Kamehameha Ave. to the entrance of Foodland. It has since been reopened.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate have yet to be determined.
