CLEARWATER, FL. (WTSP/CNN) – “Wow, that’s crazy, I straight up walked away. Wait, go back!” said Michael Curtis Smith.
It’s video that is so shocking even the guy in it has to watch it twice. The incident was captured by a red light video camera at around 3:45 p.m. on May 24 at Belcher Road and Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard.
Clearwater police say Alex Jay Hall of St. Petersburg made an improper left turn after the light turned red. An oncoming Honda motorcycle ridden by Smith hit the car and flipped in the air.
But you can see Smith gets up and walks away. Amazingly, he was not hurt.
WTSP found him at work at the IHOP on Clearwater Beach and showed him the video. He says it’s been hard getting to work without the bike.
“Taxi cab! Literally. $20 here, $20 back!” Smith said.
“I was literally upside down thinking, ‘I can land on my head or my feet,'” Smith said about the crash. “I didn’t have a helmet on, as you can see.”
He sticks the landing, tucks and rolls. Then walks it off.
Then he made a phone call, “… called my boy, said, ‘Come get me, somebody hit me,'” Smith recalled.
His friend couldn’t believe the video either. “Phew. Wow! That’s crazy.”
Clearwater police say the driver was ticketed for an improper left turn and suspended license. Smith was ticketed for not having a Florida motorcycle license.
“I learned if it is a yellow light, don’t go through it,” said Smith.
His friend suggested he never gets another motorcycle, but a car instead.
That’s not the case, though; Smith says he can’t wait to ride again. In fact, he gets his new bike today.
Smith does say he’ll try to avoid the busy intersection as much as possible.
