A traditional Hawaiian welcome ceremony was held Friday for University of Hawaii president David Lassner.
The ceremony was held at UH-Manoa’s Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge to symbolically present Lassner with the kuleana of leading the university.
The ceremony began with traditional oli and a processional, during which Lassner was greeted by chanters and representatives from various UH-Manoa colleges, and ended with a traditional awa ceremony. Seated in a circle, attendees took turns offering him words of advice and support.
Lassner has been serving as the university’s interim president since July 2013 and was selected by the university’s Board of Regents earlier this month to officially take over the position.
The appointment is effective July 1.
