Maui firefighters battle brushfire in Paia

On Maui, firefighters from Paia, Makawao, Kahului and Kihei, two tankers from Wailea and Kahului, and Air-1 responded to an unscheduled cane fire located in the Paia area

The fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday off Holomua Road.

According to officials, the fire was 80 percent contained at 3:45 p.m. with approximately 270 acres involved.

The remainder of the extinguishing and clean-up has been turned over to Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, with fire crews leaving the scene.

Holomua Road between Hana Highway and Old Maui High School was closed while crews investigated the scene.

All roads reopened just after 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

The fire cause and damages are unavailable and an investigation is on going.
