Maui rescue crews airlift injured hiker to safety

Maui fire crews rescued an injured hiker in Makawao.

It happened around noon on Thursday.

A 44-year-old Makawao resident was hiking with a friend in a stream bed about three-quarters of a mile north of the Piiholo Water Treatment facility in the Makawao Forest Reserve.

His right leg got pinned when a tree trunk got loose.

Firefighters used a chainsaw and pry bar to free his leg. He was airlifted and then taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
