Kauai installs lasers to protect endangered seabirds

New lights are being installed on Kauai but they’re not for drivers.

The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is experimenting with lasers in an effort to prevent bird strikes by endangered seabirds.

Crews are attaching multiple lasers to utility poles in ‘Ele’ele.

They say the lasers create a light fence so when the birds see it, they know to avoid it.

The utility company says the lights are not harmful to eyes and do not pose a danger to aircraft.

The company is working with the federal government and state wildlife officials.
