Six veterans of the 442nd regimental combat team were honored Wednesday evening by the government of France.
The Japanese-American veterans received the French Legion of Honor for their role in the liberation of France during WWII.
“We were all volunteers. We weren’t thinking about a medal or anything like that. I was only 24 when I went into combat. That’s been pretty young. You know,” said Shuji Akiyama, French Legion of Honor recipient.
Was Akiyama scared during the war?
“Well, I didn’t have any girlfriend or anything so that makes a lot of difference you know? Even if you scared you know,” he said.
The Legion of Honor is France’s highest award.
The six Nisei soldiers who were honored Wednesday are among the first members of the 442nd to receive the award.
