Ask HPD: Is it legal for bicyclist to ride side by side?

Honolulu Police Department Capt. Andrew Lum answers this week’s question.

Question: I live in the Hawaii Kai area and want to know the law regarding bicyclist riding side by side.

There’s a lot of bicyclist riding side by side and they take up a whole lane. I thought they’re supposed to ride in a single line. Am I wrong?

Answer: Bicyclists on a roadway must ride single file as near to the right-hand curb, on the edge of the roadway, or on the shoulder off of the roadway as practicable.

Violators can face a $72 fine. Bicyclists may only ride side by side, if the bike lane or path is wide enough, and when there are no signs prohibiting it.
