‘Smokey Joe’s Cafe’ will rock Manoa’s playhouse

Honolulu’s off-Broadway playhouse Manoa Valley Theatre will be featuring a musical revue this month.

“Smokey Joe’s Cafe” will showcase 39 pop standards, including rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

Performing in the cast are Alison Aldcroft, Katja Berthold, Derrick Brown, Jonathan Causey, Sheldon Gomabon, Alison L.B. Maldonado, Ethan Okura, Miguel K. Pa’ekukui, Pam Sandridge and Lelea’e “Buffy” Wong.

Performing in the band are Josh Cullen, Keith Griffin, Fred Oshiro, Jason Taglianetti, and Keoki Van Orden.

Costumes are by Carlynn Wolfe, lighting design is by Janine Myers, sound design is by Jason Taglianetti, set design is by M.J. Matsushita, hair and makeup design is by Lisa Ponce de Leon and props design is by Sara Ward. The stage manager is Erich Steinwandt.

The Original Broadway cast recording “Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller” won a Grammy award in 1996.

The production starts on July 3 and runs through July 20.

The musical revue is performed in two acts with one intermission.

Approximate running time is 2 hrs including one intermission.  Minimum suggested age is 10.  All patrons must occupy a seat. There is no lap seating.
