The 16-year-old boy accused of killing his mother in Waimanalo on Saturday morning has been charged with murder, and KHON2 News learned that while the victim took in many foster children over the years, the teenager was actually adopted when he was a young child.
Police arrested the teenager that day at his family home at Sherwoods Beach where the victim, 52-year-old Jolyn Kipapa, was found stabbed to death.
Kipapa’s eldest son and his wife said the family is still trying to figure out what led to the violent, and deadly, confrontation.
“He’s been in our family since he was about 5 or 6, I believe,” said the victim’s daughter-in-law, Dal-Jean Kipapa. “He’s adopted.”
“It’s a tragedy,” said Joe Kipapa, Dal-Jean’s husband and the victim’s eldest son. “Lost one brother and a mother in one day. Just trying to deal with it.”
When asked whether his younger brother was capable of doing something like this, Joe Kipapa replied “Never, always happy.”
On Monday, the flower leis that adorn the fence at the Kipapa home came from people who dedicated their Sunday church service to the memory of Jolyn Kipapa, the woman who was admired and beloved by those who knew her and her husband Kurt’s generosity.
“We just want to say thank you to all the family and friends who just came up and supported our family,” said Dal-Jean Kipapa. “We just want some privacy so we can grieve and deal with this loss.”
Because the 16-year-old accused of the murder is a juvenile, his name has not been released by the authorities. The prosecutor has turned jurisdiction of the case over to the family court, but no decision has been made as yet on whether the teenager will be tried as an adult.
