Kau man dies in single-car crash on Big Island

A 20-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Hawaii Island.

The accident happened at about 11 p.m. Friday, July 11 on Hawaii Belt Road near the junction with Ginger Blossom Lane in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

According to the Hawaii Police Department, the driver was traveling east on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11), and he lost control and veered off the right shoulder as he approached the junction with Ginger Blossom Lane.

The driver collided with a lava embankment.

The victim was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, July 13.

Police have identified the victim as Austin L. Yurong of Kau.

Investigators say alcohol and speed may be contributing factors to this collision.

This is the 8th fatality this year compared with 17 at this time last year.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated an investigation and has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
