A Maui man is recovering after being attacked by a shark on Wednesday. It happened around 5:30 p.m. in Paia.
Maui fire officials say the 61-year-old man was swimming about 200 yards off Paia Bay when a shark bit his left foot.
He says the shark was gray in color and about six to eight feet long.
Despite the bite, he was able to swim to shore on his own and walk to the Paia Youth Center to call for help.
Fire officials say the man had five to six lacerations to his left foot with the largest about six inches long.
He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical center in stable condition.
Officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources closed two miles of the beach to survey the area.
It was reopened at noon Thursday after no sharks were sighted.
