On their way to Samoa, Hawaii’s voyaging canoes are island-hopping in the Society Islands to spread the message of Malama Honua, protecting our island earth.
Passing through Moorea and to Huahine, the crews learned first-hand about what the islands do to malama honua.
For example, in Huahine, they have seasonal no fishing ban to preserve their marine life.
“It goes from December to February, and after February, it’s open to certain fishes and certain sizes,” said Hikianalia apprentice navigator Kala Baybayan.
The canoes are currently in Bora Bora and are scheduled to depart for the island of Maupiti Tuesday before voyaging to the Cook Islands next week.
