A United Airlines flight bound for Hilo from Los Angeles had to be diverted to Kona instead, and the passengers bussed over.

The state Department of Transportation says lightning strikes this past weekend damaged the lights on the longer runway which can accommodate the bigger planes like the ones that come from the mainland.

The interisland flights have not been affected since they use the smaller runway.

Electricians are working to fix the damage.
