Former Icon champ Lawler set to headline UFC event

This Saturday night in San Jose, California, former Hawai’i-based Icon Sport middleweight champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (23-10) will fight on the main event of the UFC on Fox 12 card.

Lawler, the top ranked contender in the UFC’s welterweight division, will face 5th ranked Matt Brown in what is billed as a number one contender for the title match.

Today, KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello caught up with Lawler, who gives a tip of the cap to the 808 for his ascension into superstardom.

“Ya I did a lot of growing when I fought in icon out there in Hawaii it was what I needed. It was away from the bright lights and I went out there and fought my best, the fans did a really good job of coming out and supporting all the fighters. It was awesome” said Lawler.

From 2005-2007 Lawler went 4-1 in his time fighting in Honolulu, having beaten the likes of Niko Vitale, Frank Trigg, and Murilo Rua.

You can catch Lawler’s fight Saturday on KHON2. Fight card starts at 2:00 HST.
