Officials are investigating a dead pilot whale that washed ashore near Hanalei, Kauai.
The dead whale was first reported Friday morning. Marine biologist Terry Lilley says the whale did not seem to have any physical damage.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says Fisheries staff and partners are responding and have begun an investigation into a possible cause of death.
Wende Goo of NOAA Fisheries Service, Pacific Islands Region, said a team of veterinarians and support staff are flying to Kauai Friday evening to perform the necropsy and a Hawaiian cultural practitioner has been consulted to perform the appropriate cultural protocols.
Because of the time it takes to do a careful and thorough analysis; including sending specimen to laboratories on the mainland, NOAA does not expect to have further information on the whale for at least several days.
