Three hikers spent the night Friday on the Waimano trail.
The Honolulu Fire Department officials said the hikers started the trail around 5 p.m. Friday and did not realize it would get dark so soon.
They were about two-and-a-half hours up the trail when they called for help around 8 p.m.
Firefighters arrived at 8:10 p.m.
The search was called off due to darkness.
The hikers are uninjured and were told by the fire department to stay in place.
At first light Saturday, they all hiked back down the trail without any assistance from HFD.
