Several hundred senior citizens gathered at the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center in Kalihi Friday morning for an opportunity to meet various candidates running in the upcoming Primary Election.
Over 25 candidates running for state and federal offices attended Friday’s fair, including Gov. Neil Abercrombie, state Sen. David Ige and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. All three are in the governor’s race.
“Seniors vote and they’re also not afraid to share their concerns and you’re hearing it out there,” said Stella Wong, vice president of Catholic Charities, which operates the center. “That’s good. That’s what we prepped them for. Ask the tough questions, meet the candidates and make sure they’re supportIng what you believe in.”
Wong says some of the hot topics discussed Friday morning included aging gracefully and not being a burden to their families, as well as protecting pensions and Medicare and preserving senior benefits and discounts.
