Earlier this week, KHON2 told you about a man who was arrested for trying to steal copper from a public restroom.

It happened on Wednesday morning at Ulehawa Beach Park in Nanakuli.

Kinohi Makanani, 33, was charged with trying to remove copper flashing from underneath the roof tiles.

Many of us hadn’t heard of copper flashing before, so we dug a little deeper to find out.

KHON2 learned that it helps prevent water from coming through the roof.

“So actually on some projects, the specification calls for us to paint the copper after we’re done with it. Try to disguise it so that no one knows it’s copper,” said Michael Tory, vice president of Tory’s Roofing.

“Does that seem to work in most cases?” KHON2 asked.

“It is a deterrent,” Tory said.

If you seen anyone trying to steal copper, you’re asked to call police.
