A man accused of killing his cellmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center will need to undergo further examination before a decision is made on whether he’ll be mentally fit to stand trial.
Joseph Tui Jr. is charged with first-degree murder for the death of Cyrl Chung, 76. He has pleaded not guilty.
Police say the inmates were sharing a holding cell when Tui allegedly beat Chung to death in March 2013.
During a fitness hearing Wednesday, the court ordered that another examination be conducted.
Tui remains in custody at Halawa Correctional Facility.
If convicted, he faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
