Police investigate deadly shooting in Waikiki

Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in Waikiki Wednesday night.

The incident was reported at about 8:10 p.m. on Kuhio Avenue and Liliuokalani Avenue.

According to a police report, officers were sent to a report of a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, a 52-year-old man nearly stuck the officer while he attempted to flee the scene.

The report says the suspect continued down the road and ended up colliding with a tree. The officer fired at the suspect.

Police say the man was discovered unresponsive and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The report also say the man had an open liquor container in his car.

Witnesses say it started when a Honolulu police officer tried to pull over a car. They told KHON2 the car took off and shots were fired.

“A cop had run from my side of the street and was standing in front of the car yelling at the driver to get out of the car. The driver was backing up to take off, the cop pulled his gun, and yelled at him get out of the car, get out of the car. As the driver took off, just totally gunned it, the cop let four or five bullets in the driver to the through the side window,” witness Shem Lawlor said.

Police blocked off Kuhio Avenue from Walina Street to Liliuokalani Avenue while they conducted the investigation. All roads reopened just before 4 a.m. Thursday.
