The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Big Island until 10:45 p.m.
*At 7:32 p.m.…radar and rain gauge data showed an area of persistent moderate to heavy rain from just west of hilo along the Hamakua Coast to near Waipio Valley. Estimated rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are occurring in this area. a stream gauge on the Honolii Stream has shown a rapid rise to near 10 feet during the past few hours.
*Other locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Waipio Valley, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Honomu, Honokaa and Hakalau.
Stay away from streams…drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding reduced visibility and poor braking action.
Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.
Turn around, don‘t drown.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 10:45 p.m. if heavy rain persists.
