Ill children get their day in the sun

Sun, sand and surf sounds like a regular day in Hawaii, but Saturday was extra special for a group of keiki at Kuhio Beach.

Surf4Hugs celebrated 11 years today by hosting a day of fun-in-the-sun for seriously ill children and their families.

The Thomas family kicked things off more than a decade ago.

Co-founder Brett Thomas said “this is Christmas in summer for the kids. Look around, look at all the smiles and the kids having fun and you can’t go wrong.”

Nick Agullana said “Having (my daughter) go out and, you know, no one actually takes her out, and she’s like ‘oh, I want to stay out there, I wanna go see the fishes, can we go further?, the waves are bigger, it’s all right, I wanna go!'”

Over 50 volunteers help out every year. If you’d like to get involved, visit their website at surf4hugs.com.
