City turns Waimanu Street into two-way street

WAIMANU STREET

The expansion of Ala Moana Center is bringing changes to surrounding streets.

KHON2 has learned the city is giving General Growth Properties the green light to turn Waimanu Street into a two-way street.

Currently, the block between Piikoi Street and Pensacola Street is one-way.

But with the new ewa wing coming up at Ala Moana Center, GGP wanted to make it easier for cars to get out of the mall, giving them the option to go straight onto Waimanu.

KHON2 asked people who live in the area what they think of Waimanu Street becoming two-ways.

I think it’s a good idea. It’s very difficult getting out, and trying to get into the left hand lane and make a left hand turn so I think it’s safer and better,” Hawaiki Tower resident Dave Zuccolotto said.

In order to change this block into a two-way street the traffic lights need to be adjusted, and the road needs to be re-striped.

The city plans to release more information on the plans in the coming days.

Work is expected to get underway later this month.
