Maui fire partly destroys residence

The Maui Fire Dept. responded to a residence fire Tuesday morning.

The Hana fire station received an alarm at 7:57 a.m. for smoke visible near a residence between mile marker 28 and 29 in upper Nahiku.

Upon arrival, fire fighters found a one-story, two-bedroom cottage on fire, with heavy smoke showing from the eaves and some flames near the front door.

The fire was contained to one of the bedrooms.

About a third of the cottage was destroyed.

No one was home at the time of the incident. Cost of damages to the structure and contents and cause of the fire are under investigation.
