Hokulea and Hikianalia are making their way through the Cook Islands and right now the crews are on the island of Aitutaki, with a population of about 2,000.
Along the way, the crews did have some trouble with the weather, with winds switching and cloud cover making it difficult to navigate, but they made it safely to Aitutaki.
And from thousands of miles away, crew members wanted to send a message home.
“I just wanted to show some love to the families on the Big Island that got hit by the hurricanes,” said Hokulea crewmember Kaniela Anakalea-Buckley, “just wanted to show some love, just know that we’re thinking about you.”
This week, the canoes will head to the atoll of Suwarrow, nearly 450 miles away from Aitutaki.
