Ask HPD: Is there any maximum legal tint for car’s windshield, window?

Honolulu Police Department Capt. Andrew Lum answers this week’s question.

Question: What is the maximum legal tint?  Can you tint the front windshield?

Answer: Most people tint their vehicle windows to block the sun and reduce the glare and heat, but there are some requirements drivers need to meet.

The tint on the driver’s, passengers and rear windows on sedans should allow more than 35 percent of light.  It’s the same for SUV’s and vans, except there is no limit on the passenger’s and rear windows.

As for the front windshields, the owner can have non-reflective tint but only on the top four inches of the windshield.

The vehicle’s owner can be fined $287.
