Cal Lee makes return to Saint Louis sideline this weekend against Mililani

Former University of Hawaii assistant coach Cal Lee will make his return to the Crusader sidelines this weekend. Lee, who led the Crusaders to 14 prep bowl and state championships during his last stint with the team 13 years ago, kicks off his first game as Saint Louis’s head coach against defending OIA champion Mililani at John Kauinana Stadium.

Although it’s been over a decade since Lee was head coach for the Crusaders, his coaching philosophy and style hasn’t changed when it comes to the young student-athletes.

“I don’t think you change much, the kids, you know, you coach them. I think because they’re high school you do more fundamentals where in college you got to work with more skilled personnel that’s coming to the college,” said Lee. “Basically, kids are kids no matter what school they are, but basically work on fundamentals, it’s about the game of football.”

The Crusaders, led by senior quarterback Ryder Kuhns, finished the season 6-3 last year and finished last in ILH division 1. Kuhns ended his junior year going 117 of 176 passing with 1911 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Under center for the Trojans will be McKenzie Milton. The junior quarterback went 137 of 230 passing with 1626 yards in the air and 16 touchdowns. Milton also rushed 77 times for 528 yards and four touchdowns.

Mililani coach Rod York is eagerly awaiting the matchup against the Crusaders, a game which could be a prelude to the state championship.

“Let me make one thing clear; Coach Cal Lee is the king and the king is back,” said York. “It’s going to be an honor but at the same time, if you want to be the best, you got to beat the best and I’m looking forward to that matchup.”

Lee and his Crusader squad takes on the Trojans this Saturday at John Kauinana Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

In related news, KHON Sports Director Rob DeMello reported Wednesday night that former Sacred Hearts Athletics Director Wade Okamura has been hired as the new A.D. at Saint Louis School. His first day on the job will be on Friday.
