Weather is creating some challenges for Hokulea and Hikianalia as the voyaging canoes make their way to Samoa.

The lack of winds is the problem. The canoes are making their way through an area called the South Pacific Convergence Zone, where the winds can be very light — and that’s not good for sailing.

Apprentice navigator Kala Baybayan said “similar to the doldrums in this area, we have the southeasterly and the northeasterly trades colliding. Luckily for us, they’re finally starting to move out.”

The canoes’ next stop is Faleasao in American Samoa. They should be there by Monday night.
