Lady ‘Bows Soccer opens 2014 season this weekend

HONOLULU —The University of Hawai’i women’s soccer team kicks off its 2014 campagin when it hosts the Outrigger Resorts Shootout, Aug. 22, 24 and 25. All home matches will again be played at the Waipi’o Peninsula Stadium and admission is free.

Joining UH in the round-robin tournament will be Arizona State and Texas. The Rainbow Wahine will play its season opener against the Sun Devils on Sunday, Aug. 24 then will face Texas on Monday, Aug. 25. Both matches begin at 5:00 p.m. Arizona State and Texas open the tournament with a match on Friday, Aug. 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The Rainbow Wahine return 18 active letterwinners and seven starters from a 2013 squad that went 8-8-1 overall. UH enters its third season in the Big West and were selected fifth in the preseason poll—the exact same place they finished in last year’s regular-season standings. Among the UH returnees this year are all-conference players Lidia Battaglia, Monk Berger, Kama Pascua and Krystal Pascua. The team will also be boosted by the arrival of six newcomers.

This will be the second all-time meeting between UH and Arizona State and first since a 2003 win by the Sun Devils. ASU returns 14 letterwinners from last year’s team that went 9-8-2 overall. Meanwhile, UH and Texas will meet on the pitch for the first time. The Longhorns return all but one starter after going 12-6-2 last year.

‘Bow Bits: Michele Nagamine enters her fourth season as head coach (21-29-5) …the Rainbow Wahine improved its win percentage from the previous season in each of Nagamine’s first three years… UH is 5-12-3 all-time in season openers and 6-10-3 in its first home match of the year…UH went 4-5 at home last year…prior to that UH was undefeated in 14 of its previous 15 home matches (11-1-3) dating back to 2011… all-Big West honorees and sisters Kama Pascua (4g) and Krystal Pascua (5a) headline the list of returning starters…top scorer and all-region forward Tiana Fujimoto (10g) will redshirt the 2014 campaign after season-ending surgery in the summer…Monk Berger returns for her sophomore campaign in goal after setting a new single-season school record in shutouts (7), en route to a spot on the all-Big West Freshman Team…UH will need to replace three of four starters in the backline with all-Big West HM Lidia Battaglia the only returning starter…UH welcomes six new players to the roster hailing from Hawai’i, California and Washington.
