The father of two seven-year-old boys who accidentally caused this weekend’s brushfire in Makakilo apologized to the public Saturday afternoon.

Troy Wright said in a prepared statement that “we are here to say that we regret what has happened. Our children realize the consequences of their actions … We want parents to realize that this could happen to anyone and how important it is to discuss fire safety with their children. We will participate in a fire safety program with them … Sorry.”

“The fire department do want to say that we commend Mr. Wright and his family for being forthcoming and assisting us with finding out the origin and cause of the fire,” said Capt. David Jenkins. “We do appreciate how quickly they realized the dangers and called 9-1-1 immediately when there was a fire, and their assistance in getting out the message to families that this can happen to anyone and fire education is very important.”

The Honolulu Fire Department said at an earlier press conference that the brothers were playing with a lighter Friday afternoon when they touched off the brushfire that still burns in Makakilo.

The fire has burned around 800 acres.

More than 60 people in 20 companies made up of Honolulu police, Honolulu and federal fire, and military crews have joined together to fight and contain the brushfire.

As many as three helicopters were seen dumping water on the fire.

The Dept. of Land and Natural Resources also reports that, at the HFD’s request, a crew from the federal Dept. of Forestry and Wildfire is helping out.

The brushfire is not close to or on forest reserve land, and the crew is cutting grass, brush and trees during the all-day operation.

HFD also reported that there will be a fire watch in the area tonight.
