WAIPAHU, Oahu – The University of Hawai`i women’s soccer day went toe-to-toe with Texas before eventually succumbing in a 2-1 loss in the final match of the Outrigger Resorts Shootout Monday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Whitney Jaynes scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to lift the Longhorns to the win, while handing UH’s its second straight loss to start the season. A day after suffering a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Arizona State, the Rainbow Wahine came back in strong fashion, taking an early lead and playing Texas to a draw until late in the second half.

Arizona State and Texas finished with identical 1-0-1 records, however, the Sun Devils claimed the tournament title by virtue of goal differential.

For the second straight match UH got off to a lightning quick start. After going scoreless last season, Krystal Pascua buried her first goal of the 2014 campaign just 4:12 into the match. After settling a ball a few yards outside the corner of the penalty box, the junior forward turned and sent a solid shot that found its way inside the upper far post.

Texas answered in the 22nd minute when Lindsey Meyer fed Julia Dyche in the box for a close range shot that got past UH keeper Monk Berger.

UH out-shot Texas 6-2 in the first half, but Texas turned the tables in the second half by out-shooting UH by the same count. The decisive play came at the 72:47 mark when Jaynes sent a rocket from just outside the box that skimmed inside the far corner of the goal.

The Rainbow Wahine are back in action on Thursday, Aug. 28 when it hosts Northern Illinois in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
