An 11-year-old girl was honored by the Honolulu City Council Wednesday for saving a young boy’s life.
Last July, Chelsey Anne Dungca was at the Coronado swimming pool in Ewa By Gentry when she noticed a five-year-old boy headed toward the deep end.
In the blink of an eye, he let go of the railing and sank to the bottom of the pool.
Before anyone could react, the Honowai Elementary student dove down to get him.
“I just didn’t want to stand there and see it, so I decided to go and get him for the other people,” she said. “I just grabbed him and just really focused on getting him out the water so he could live.”
Dungca half-carried, half-dragged him out of the pool and called 911 as adults administered CPR.
The boy eventually coughed up water and regained consciousness.
City officials say if it wasn’t for Dungca’s calm thinking and quick actions, the boy might not have survived.
