Lava flow crosses into Kaohe Homesteads, no threat to residents

Residents are now on stand-by as the lava flow has now entered the Kaohe Homesteads on Hawaii Island.

The good news is that the area where lava entered is a vacant forested area. No homes are in any danger, for now.

The latest report from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says the lava could reach Apaa Street in 15 days, and possibly continue on to Highway 130 in 20 days.

But again, experts caution that could all change, and for that reason, county officials opened their command center this morning at the Pahoa Recreational Center. It will be open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

Another community meeting will be held Thursday at Pahoa High School..
