University of Hawai’i multi-purpose star Scott Harding was selected as the Mountain West’s Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance in Saturday’s victory over Northern Iowa.
In addition, the Brisbane, Australia native was one of five players selected by the Paul Hornung Award to its weekly honor roll.
On Saturday, Harding was a factor in all three positions he played on the field. He punted a career-high 11 times for a 38.7 average; returned a career-best seven punts for a 10.9 average, and caught one pass for a career-long 52-yards
Seven of his 11 punts landed inside the UNI 20-yard line, including two inside the 10. A fourth-quarter punt deflected off a Northern Iowa returner and was recovered by the Rainbow Warriors, setting up a field goal and a 27-17 lead.
He also recovered UNI’s on-side kick attempt late in the fourth quarter after the Panthers closed to within 27-24.
Five of his punt returns went for 10-plus yards. His seven punt returns tied a Mountain West single-game record, while his 11 punts tied for the fourth-most in a game in league history.
In the game, Harding also saw his streak of 80 consecutive punts without a touchback come to an end as a third quarter punt sailed into the end zone. The streak started during the 2012 season and he went without a touchback in 56 punts last season.
Harding and the Rainbow Warriors will face their third Pac-12 opponent this season with a road game at Colorado, Saturday, Sept. 20.
