A Kihei woman died in an early morning crash on the Lahaina Bypass.
Maui police say that a 24-year-old Kihei man was driving south in a 2009 Toyota when he lost control at about 12:45 a.m.
The vehicle spun across the makai grassy shoulder and spun back onto the roadway where it collided into a guardrail.
The passenger, 23-year-old Taryn Kiyota, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver did not sustain any injuries as a result of the crash.
He was arrested for manslaughter and released pending further investigation.
Police say the vehicle airbags did deploy. The operator was not wearing a seatbelt, and the passenger was wearing a seatbelt.
MPD says that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. The involvement of drugs has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.
This is Maui County’s 18th Traffic fatality this year, as compared to 11 at the same time last year.
