The island of Kauai is harnessing the power of the sun in a big way with a state’s largest solar project.
The 12-megawatt Koloa solar project includes 45,360 panels.
Officials from Kauai Island Utility Cooperative say it will generate enough energy to power 4,000 homes and save about 1.7 million gallons of oil a year.
That’s the equivalent of 5.5 percent of the electricity used annually for Kauai.
The price tag for the project is $40 million and it was built by SolarCity on 67 acres leased from Grove Farm near the old Koloa Mill.
