City workers join fight against invasive insects

Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle

City workers are joining the battle against the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle and Little Fire Ant.

The Oahu Invasive Species committee is helping to train city officials and coordinate efforts with federal and state agencies in the war against these two invasive insects.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said “because if they take hold, they will kill our coconut trees, and I was told in Guam they lost 50 percent of their coconut trees in something like five years … That can’t happen here.”

Ground maintenance crews will begin setting up beetle and ant traps at city parks and golf courses across Oahu to locate possible insect infestations.
