Maui lifeguards were on alert after a shark was spotted in waters off Makena State Park Tuesday morning.
Officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources say the 8-10-foot shark was seen near the shoreline at around 11:40 a.m.
A turtle also came ashore with part of its flipper missing and a large bite mark on its shell, measuring about a foot in diameter. A DLNR spokesperson said people who ran up for a closer look spooked the turtle and it returned to the ocean.
The beach was not closed, however lifeguards warned nearby beach goers of the sighting.
