Several people were treated for injuries after a tow truck and tour van crashed Tuesday afternoon.
It happened at around 12:46 p.m. on a bridge at Kahana Bay, involving a Sylva’s Towing truck and Explore Hawaii van.
According to a passenger, the driver of the tow truck fell asleep at the wheel.
“We were on the correct side of the road and suddenly the tow truck is on the wrong side of the road right in front of us, and our guy sort of tried to evade him and he actually minimized the impact for us so that’s good,” said Doug Watson, a visitor from Australia.
Emergency Medical Services says paramedics treated a total of 12 patients, including the 25-year-old tow truck driver, who was hospitalized in serious condition.
A 74-year-old woman was also listed in serious condition, and five others were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
The road was contraflowed as authorities responded to the crash.
